Golden State of Mind has a new logo!

Have you visited Golden State of Mind lately? On Friday, January 20th, we unveiled our new logo publicly at GSoM Night 11 and even gave away free tee's to our loyal readers. The credit goes to GSoM contributor Sleepy Freud on the great logo design. Sleepy and I, along with the rest of the GSoM Crew started brainstorming concepts last summer with a handful of great ideas that went into production. By the end of December we narrowed it down to this concept and made a few adjustments that was green lit to be released GSoM Night 11. I love the color combination of the new logo and effective placement of elements. Great job all around!

Jessography's New Tattoo

Back in April of last year I helped my friend Jess with a logo to help brand her company name. She had a playful concept to illustrate a camera with her name wrapped around the camera. Fast forward to the start of 2012 and I find the logo I designed as her new tatto inked by Viet IllusionsCalTattoo. Really good stuff and a first for me to see something I worked on etched for life as a tattoo!

First off a big congratulations to the San Francisco 49ers and their big win against the New Orleans Saints this past weekend! In between plays I was on my Powerbook doing some light work and watching the game - everytime a big play happened I did a few humorous quick wordplay designs that went viral on social media sites like Facebook and Tumblr. Just having some fun, I also made a few web avatars of the recent "Nobody - Jim Harbaugh" vector illustration I did for Facebook heads. More fun designs within the week, congrats San Francisco!

What a season... and we're in the playoffs! Congrats San Francisco, you guys deserve it! I've heard and seen the "who's got it better..." quote all over the bay area. It's inspiring and fitting to everyone involved in the organization along with it's fans. I've seen the variety in shirt designs and fan related art so I decided to do a little some special on my part and a supportive fan. Going the vector illustration route, I decided to capture the Niners head coach who helped this losing franchise rise back on top. For the look, I wanted to give it that "The army wants you" look but in red and gold. Enjoy and good luck this weekend 49ers!

First Look: Retro Beat Down by Tony.psd

Here's a first look of a design I was working on today titled "Retro Beat Down." I've always wanted to dive into the whole "&" name drop/list design but couldn't come up with any solid ideas. For me, I grew up playing a lot of 80's "Beat em' up" arcade style game because they were easy to play and you can pass certain games in 2-3 hours tops. So I decided to list my favorite fighter games along with 2 that jump started the sub genre. The last thing, I wanted to give it an 80's style typecase to get people curious in reading the shirt. I figure if we're going retro let's bring the block type font back! Release date: Shooting for February.

New toys for my Studio

These were Christmas gifts from my brother Joe during the holidays. What can I say, the guy knew I loved toys. Speaking of which, I recall a conversation with upper management at my old job explaining to me that "Toys were very unprofessional at the work place and it was also a distraction to others..." I never played with em', if anything I always thought they looked cool at my desk. I actually agreed with them at some point and emptied out my cubicle. Last May when I visited my brothers workplace at Microsoft's gaming studio - I gotta say, they had more toys in that building than a Toys R' Us! It made them happy within their hectic work environment. Than again, at my old job a lot of my co-workers were in their mid 40's - late 50's so I can see where the opinions differed. Moral of the story - these are f*cking awesome and will be displayed all over my studio, lol.

When unemployment kicked in April, so did my creative juices. Here's a run down of how 2011 went down: 18 shirt designs printed. 11 new, 4 reprinted, 5 "Beast Mode" color ways and no over stock. Post 200: 3 Important events of 2011

As we celebrate post 200 of 2011, I reflect on 3 important events that are about to open the doors of 2012 wide open with my company and a creative outlook. This was one hell of a year and we made the absolute best of it!

1) April 2011: I was let go of my job of 7 years. I've always considered myself a hard worker, the company was going a different direction. When the news broke between me and my boss, I saw it as a blessing to pursue greater things... I did not expect the next 2 events.

2) September 2011: After a dozen promising job interviews, I realized the industry had changed. It was more corporate if not complex to get your foot in the door. 11 years of experience just wasn't enough. A friend told me "If you do what you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life." By mid August I decided to open up my own design studio. 50% of my work focused on my apparel design and personal projects while the other half focused on design consulting with clients. We opened shop September 1st, 2011.

3) November 23, 2011: Our first public appearance at a bay area event and a successful Black Friday - Holiday campaign that resulted in 7 shirt designs released (3 new designs, 2 reprinted, 2 new Beast mode color ways) with no over stock. Success never tasted so good - it wasn't about how much we made, it's how much we accomplished in so little time. 2012 is going to be nothing but winning,

My Parents visit the Studio

On Christmas day, my wife's parents and brothers visited my studio for the first time since opening in September. I gotta say, it was a great feeling that meant a lot to me, especially seeing my parents Gill and Lina see how my operation runs. It was a little tough explaining what I did on a regular basis when we visited them in Vallejo so seeing them at my studio meant everything. My folks are visual folks who like to see things first hand, being here - they could see the hard work, dedication and set up of the studio including my inventory and samples. They even went home with a "Pwet" shirt, lol. Definitely a merry christmas!

Behind the scenes: Winter Shoot SF 2011 (part 2)

Since the week prior to Black Friday/Thanksgiving its been one hell of a ride for my business. Everyday has been a busy schedule and I'm just finally getting the chance to sit back and appreciate the photo's Rod and Richard have been sending me. This set of behind the scene's pics is coming from Rod Rosete. (307 Photography) Rod and I have been planning the SF shoot for about a month and it was our first production shoot together.

I love his work ethic , we had meetings week after week prior to the shoot and if there's one thing I appreciated most was him taking the time to help me brand my company effectively through strong photography. He also gave me a wide variety of shots along with various lighting techniques. All of these suggestions and new idea's worked to both of our advantages. Rod built a strong portfolio out of these pics and I had a wide variety of pics to choose from for the on-line store and direct marketing. It was definitely a pleasure to work with him and I hope to do more work with him in the future.

This year I decided to design my own holiday greeting card because I wasn't very fond of the pre-made templates they had available at Costco... I figure, since they had the option to upload custom templates let's do something different this year. We also decided on using a teal backdrop since we felt it would stand out a little more versus the typical red and green greeting cards. Anyways, they came in today and were shipped to friends, family and loyal customers down since day one. Happy holidays everyone!

Beast Mode's Evolution

Since it's release this past April, "Beast Mode" has come a long way from the original concept of giving tribute to that classic Sega arcade game. Beast Mode has found it's way in the variant color way market of Bay area sports related team innocently. I went with the black and orange color way this past summer only because I only wore black t-shirts, lol. When we moved back to San Jose this past October it was fitting to release a teal version with broken hockey sticks paying tribute to the 408's favorite hockey team. The aftermath of our Black Friday/Cyber Monday event left us with our inventory tipping into the half stock mark so we decided to bring back the beast but in 2 different color ways: Golden State and Gold Rush fitting to the GS Warriors and SF Niners in respect to their team colors.

It's been a fun ride with each design completely selling out. I can say a few more color ways are in the works but for 2012, the term "Beast Mode" will definitely take another step into more abstract designs if not a new look. The term is just fun wordplay everyone can appreciate.

These samples are long over due and it's time to share it with our readers. For months we've gone back and fourth sharing ideas on branding Golden State of Mind as it's own identity and not using elements our favorite basketball team and many others are using. We've considered abandoning the use of the Bay Bridge, the California state as a silhouette and basketball players for GSoM's logo because it's already been done many times over. Feedback is appreciated, again nothing is final just sharing some of these designs to the public.

Cyber Monday is a wrap!

I'll say it again in regret: I didn't participate in last years Cyber Monday sale event. To tell you the truth I just didn't have any heart last Christmas to sell. I posted a few pictures here and there and nothing moved. That's karma for you, not enough effort - you get poor results in return. This year was different... with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday already a success, if there was one event I did not want to foul up it was Cyber Monday. When the day ended, I achieved 3 things today: 1- My customers saved a lot of money. 2- I did not lose any of my money invested on tripling my inventory. 3- We made money - and that's how a business stays open & succeeds. Marking the entire store down including sales items were a big gamble but n the end, everyone got what they wanted. In the end, after 4 days of selling hard - man, we've established ourselves as a legitimate small business and it feels great! Again, thank you everyone for your continued support. This was a long time coming... 3 years to be exact. What became a simple hobby, turned into a personal dream of owning my own business and doing what I love most: Being creative. Through t-shirt designs, I express my designs based on personal interests and humor for people to publicly see. On Wednesday, November 23rd - my wife and I were invited to set up our first merchandise booth at DJ Streak and Genevieve Chanelle's "Pre-Thanksgiving Bash" at Level 236 in San Mateo. It was a great experience setting up shop for the first time, interact with the public and have fun! This is the first of many events, we are blessed for this opportunity and plan to attend many more.

It was a pleasure to work with Rod Rosete (STE307 Photography) for my winter photoshoot. I've always been conservative of how I have my photo's shot and have always made simple requests in the past. Working with Rod, his recommendations on location and suggestions to how each photo is shot has brought new insight to how I brand my company. Rod has a great work attitude as a photographer and provides many options prior to the shoot date including lens and lighting options. I hope we can work together in future projects. Back in the days there was this thing called a "photo album" where people took pictures and had them developed and stored in this booklet. Before everyone "uploaded" their pics on Facebook this was the what we used to do, lol. ‎When you come to my studio, I set up a photo album, design portfolio and even a sketch book for my clients to view. It's gotten tacky showing folks my work on my lap top, especially when wi-fi is lagging in the studio or I'd forgot the url address to your portfolio!

Did you catch us on local news in Sacramento? I tell ya', for any Warriors game - my wife and I plan ahead and base our day for our Dubs. Whether it's taking a day off together or showing up an hour early, as fans we participate in everything from the warm ups to conversing with fans alike. I printed out about 2,000 business cards this past July to help spread the word of my business. We ran out which is great - hopefully we got the word out! My business cards are always given to people I meet on a regular basis and I pack them with every order along with a handful of stickers. These stickers are double sided, this time featuring some hockey sticks, teal, a solid white background and buddy Jacqueline!

We've seen it all or atleast I've seen it all which is why I never really attempted to do another design. My client from Htmkr Mgt met up with me last month and this is what we came up with...
